In Vedic astrology, there is a total of 360 degrees. Given that there are 12 zodiac signs, each zodiac sign occupies 30 degrees (360 divided by 12 is 30). Within each degree, there are 60 arc minutes, and within each arc minute, there are 60 arc seconds.
Whenever writing the placement of planets in Vedic astrology, we refer to the placements in the following format given below:
Ascendant (for example): 27°45’39’’
Here, the placement of the planet is 27 degrees 45 arc minutes 39 arc seconds. Once again, for reference:
- Total degrees = 360 degrees
- Number of zodiac signs = 12
- Degrees per zodiac signs = 360/12 = 30 degrees
- 1 degree = 60 arc minutes
- 1 arc minute = 60 arc seconds
- So, 1 degree = 60 arc minutes = 3600 arc seconds
Those are basic computations you need to know in order to make sense of the degrees of the planets in your ascendant chart.
